I created the environment of a VR application (PaxVR) for patients at Deventer Hospital. The application's purpose is to relax patients undergoing medical procedures such as blood drawing by immersing them in a calming VR forest environment.
I developed this application together with a team from the ground-up, initially working on rigs and creatures. To improve the application, I re-did the environment: terrain (using Unreal terrain tools), water shader, trees, plants and grass, falling leaves, wind.
The foliage is hand-painted and the trees are 2.5D, as the user is confined to one place. I focused on optimizing this environment while making it more visually appealing and immersive and successfully increased the average FPS by lowering the polycount of the environment assets, using masked foliage and recreating the terrain.
